SWIMMING WITH THE VIRGIN [SHORT FILM VERSION]
Swimming With The Virgin – Feature Film Synopsis
Once upon a time there was a 13-year-old girl named Julie, who escaped reality by fantasizing about meeting her mother and the Virgin Mary underwater. Everyday, Julie attends catechism class, where Father John warns the kids of “worldly” dangers, and for Julie not to follow the promiscuous path of her older sister Caroline (19 years old). At night she watches the promiscuous activity of her older sister through a whole in closet wall. One day, in an act of defiance, Julie ignores his warnings and attempts to seduce her childhood friend Peter. Because of that, she is ostracized by the kids in her community, from her friend Peter, and becomes trapped in her sister’s world of promiscuity and despair. Because of that, Julie's underwater fantasy disappears and she stops showing up for catechism class. Because of that, Father John sets off on a journey to recover Julie, enlisting the unlikely help of Caroline and Peter along the way. Until finally, Julie is reunited with her catechism class, her relationship with her sister and Peter is restored, and she learns that no matter what she thinks she’s done, God’s love for her is all that matters. She marches down the aisle to be confirmed and her underwater fantasy with her mother and the Virgin Mary returns.

Underwater sequences were taken from my M.F.A. Thesis film ‘Swimming With The Virgin’. The idea developed to use just the underwater dream sequences for a giant installation at a Gala to open the Savannah Film Festival. 7 videos were made approximately 11 minutes each on a loop that appeared on 7 screens throughout the event space. Thank you to Olivia and Diana and Josie and all the crew underwater and at the installation space who made this happen!
